Tour Description

Mafra National Palace - There will be much to say about this monument, consisting of a palace and a monastery. Ordered by D. João V in the eighteenth century, in fulfillment of a promise, is undoubtedly the greatest work of his reign. The whole set is worth a visit, including the Library, which in addition to its grandeur, contains over 36,000 volumes. Just imagine the number of people, from the workers who laid all the stones to form this complex ensemble, to the sculptors and architects who made this monument unique. A must visit.

Ericeira - Another village full of history. Legend has it that the name means "land of hedgehogs". Village very linked to fishing, had a great commercial development in the nineteenth century, due to its port. It was from the port of Ericeira that the Royal Family left for exile, marking the end of the monarchy.
This region has several beaches well known for the large amount of iodine and also due to the large waves that allow surfing, being the first surf reserve in Europe and the second in the world. Here are some of the reasons not to miss this beautiful village.

Castle - built by the Arabs, was conquered by D. Afonso Henriques to the Moors in 1148. It was the residence of Queen D. Leonor, wife of D. João II.
D. Manuel I was responsible for rebuilding the Paços do Alcaide and various works in the Castle and the village. It is classified as a National Monument.

Sanctuary of the Lord Jesus of the Stone - Queen D. Leonor reportedly placed a stone cross with the image of Christ crucified on the road that links Óbidos to Caldas da Rainha. This image was very venerated at the time but was later forgotten.
According to legend, a farmer in the eighteenth century was called by this cross, asking him for veneration because there was a prolonged drought. The farmer worshiped the cross with others, and from there came the much desired rain. The image was stored in a wooden chapel. In 1740, the foundation stone was laid for the construction of the sanctuary, with the collaboration of D. João V, who offered large amounts whenever he visited this image, on the way to Caldas da Rainha where he performed treatments at the Hospital.
