Santuário de Fátima

  FÁTIMA HALF-DAY PRIVATE TOUR

According to one legend, the name of the city originates from the name of a Moorish princess named Fatima, and at the time of the Christian Reconquest, was captured by the Christian army and given to an Earl of Ourem in marriage. In 1158, after converting to the Christian religion, she was baptized and named after Oriana. The mountainous lands received the name of Fatima, and the county the name of Oriana, which later became Ourem.
But Fatima is known worldwide because on May 13, 1917, Our Lady appeared to three children (Lucia Santos, Francisco and Jacinta Marto) who were taking care of the sheep in the Cova de Iria. She visited the three shepherds every 13th between May and October 1917. The last apparition took place on October 13, 1917, being witnessed by 70,000 pilgrims who attended the so-called Sun Miracle.
