Tour Description
Fatima - according to one legend, the name of the city, originates from the name of a Moorish princess named Fatima, and at the time of the Christian Reconquest, was captured by the Christian army and given to a Count of Ourém in marriage. In 1158, after converting to the Christian religion, she was baptized and named after Oriana. The highlands received the name of Fatima, and the county the name of Oriana, which later became Ourem.
But Fatima is known worldwide because on May 13, 1917, Our Lady appeared to three children (Lucia Santos, Francisco and Jacinta Marto) who were taking care of the sheep in the Cova de Iria. She visited the three shepherds every 13th between May and October 1917. The last apparition took place on October 13, 1917, being witnessed by 70,000 pilgrims who attended the so-called Sun Miracle.
Shrine of Fatima - is one of the most important Marian shrines in the world of the Catholic Church. In it, the memory of the Apparitions of Our Lady to the three shepherds is preserved.
Chapel of the Apparitions - built in response to a request of Our Lady of the Rosary, is located in the Sanctuary grounds.
The pedestal where you can see the original sculpture of Our Lady of Fatima, marks the site of the small holm oak tree where the Virgin Mary appeared on May 13, 1917, to the three shepherds, Lucia, Francisco and Jacinta.
Basilica of the Holy Trinity - opened on October 12, 2007, at the close of the 90th anniversary of the apparitions of Our Lady. This building is the fourth largest Catholic temple in the world in capacity, with 8633 seats and 40,000 m2 of floor space.
Batalha Monastery - the Batalha Monastery or Monastery of Santa Maria da Vitória, was built in 1386 by King D. João I of Portugal, as a thank to the Virgin Mary for the victory in the Battle of Aljubarrota. It is one of the most significant monuments of the Portuguese Gothic. It was donated by D. João I to the Order of St. Dominic, and is located near the place where the important victory in the battle against the Castilians took place, which would become decisive to end the succession crisis after the death of the King Fernando
It was classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1983 due to its historical significance and architectural value.
The construction of this monastery encompassed seven reigns and its interior is of unparalleled beauty.
NAZARÉ - it is a village with one of the oldest fishing traditions and one of the most colorful.
The Sítio is a promontory where you get a stunning landscape and a legend that we can not fail to tell.
Legend has it that the mayor of Porto de Mos castle, D. Fuas Roupinho, chased a deer on a foggy day when he hunted as the deer headed for the top of the cliff. Almost on the edge of the cliff, D. Fuas Roupinho asked the Virgin Mary for help.
If you walk the streets of the village, you can not miss the fishmongers with their seven skirts, the well-known and typical Nazarene costume.
Its half-moon beach and big waves so famous for surfers who brave them fearlessly make this town one of the must-see places.
Hermitage of Memory - built in 1182 by D. Fuas Roupinho, contains blue and white tiles alluding to the apparition of Our Lady when D. Fuas Roupinho was about to fall on the cliff just like the deer. The lower floor is the cave where was found the original image of the Virgin whom D. Fuas Roupinho asked for help.
Shrine of Our Lady of Nazareth - the image of this Virgin is black and was carved from wood, having been brought from Merida to this promontory in 711 by Friar Romano who fled the Muslims in the company of D. Rodrigo, the last Visigoth king.
It is believed that this image is the original one found on the altar of the church. In addition to the two bell towers, the Sanctuary is flanked by two buildings: the hospital and the former royal palace where the kings and other dignitaries were housed.
S. Miguel Arcanjo Fort - from here you get beautiful views of the beach and the village.
This fortress served as protection against successive attacks on the beach by Algerian, Moroccan and Norman pirates.
