Tour Description
Silver Water Aqueduct - its construction began in 1532 by order of King D. João III and has been classified as a National Monument since 1910.
Chapel of Bones - is one of the best known chapels of Évora and is located in the Church of St. Francis, built on the initiative of three Franciscan monks in the seventeenth century. The entrance reads a warning that intends to remind us of the transience of life: “We bones that we are here, for yours we wait.”
The walls and the eight pillars are lined with bones and skulls, and the vaults with allegorical motifs to death.
Sé Catedral - is considered the largest medieval cathedral in Portugal. Its construction began in 1186 and ended in 1250. A monument in Romanesque style transitioning to the Gothic and with later elements of Renaissance and Baroque style.
Its interior is impressive, from the altars to the chapels there, to the gothic cloister.
A memorable visit.
Roman Temple of Evora - a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of Evora's most famous monuments and one of the symbols of Roman presence in this city.
It was built in the 1st century AD and modified in the 2nd and 3rd centuries. It was destroyed at the time of the invasions of the Germanic peoples in the fifth century, leaving only the ruins.
Cromlech of Almendres - is the most important megalithic monument of this type of the Iberian Peninsula and one of the most important in Europe.
It consists of a prehistoric stone circle with 95 stone monoliths.
Monsaraz - situated on the top of a hill overlooking the Guadiana river and the Spanish border, it has always been the subject of dispute among various peoples and still maintains military and religious influences.
It was finally regained by D. Sancho II in 1232, with the support of the Order of the Templars, later Order of Christ, to whom he donated the village. Surrounded by walls, the village retains its ancestral characteristics.
Castle - built by King D. Dinis in the 14th century, it is a magnificent viewpoint to the stunning landscape that can be seen from here.
Alqueva Dam - It is the largest dam in Portugal and the largest artificial lake in Europe, with over 1100 km of banks, several islands and islets and the 250 km2 reservoir.
Located on the Guadiana River, its construction aimed to irrigate the entire Alentejo area, as well as energy production, thus avoiding the desertification of the Alentejo.
With its construction, the inhabitants of Aldeia da Luz were housed in a new village, because the old one was submerged.
The Luz Museum was created with the purpose of preserving the heritage of the old village and the region.
